Your Body's 3 Power Centres in Midlife: Chakra Healing in Menopause

September 22, 2026•4 min read

Before you knew the word for it, you probably felt it. Ungrounded. Flat. Unsure of your own voice in rooms you used to walk into without thinking. That felt experience usually arrives long before anyone hands you a framework for it.

There's a physiological reason for that, before there's anything esoteric about it. Your hormonal buffer, the oestrogen that used to help you manage stress, regulate emotion, and recover from exertion, is declining. Your nervous system is more sensitive than it used to be. This is a reckoning, your body's tolerance for patterns that were never sustainable finally running out, not a personal failing.

Ancient traditions mapped this territory long before anyone had a word for oestrogen. Three energy centres in the lower body, each governing something specific, each showing recognisable signs when it's running on empty. You don't need to believe in anything here. Just notice where you recognise yourself.

Root: Your Sense of Safety

The root centre, at the base of your body, governs whether you feel steady, safe, and held in the world.

A depleted root often shows up as anxiety or hypervigilance, financial fear, tension in the hips or lower back, or a general sense of floating slightly above your own life instead of standing in it.

Tiny practice: Get outside. Feel the air, notice the light, let your feet feel the ground beneath you. Nature is the original nervous system regulator, and a few minutes of it does more for the root than any amount of thinking your way to feeling safe.

Sacral: Your Flow, Pleasure, and Aliveness

Just below your navel, the sacral centre governs your emotional and creative energy, your relationship with desire and vitality.

A depleted sacral looks like chronic fatigue that doesn't lift, emotional numbness, loss of joy in things that used to light you up, going through the motions, a sense of flatness or “what's the point.” You're not lazy, and you're not broken. This centre needs tending, not willpower.

Tiny practice: Place a hand on your lower belly and take a few slow, circular breaths, letting the belly soften and expand. Your hips hold your sacral power too. As you breathe, circle them slowly, ten times in each direction. Let it be playful. This is your body claiming its own space.

Solar Plexus: Your Personal Power

Above your navel, the solar plexus governs confidence, will, and personal power, the quiet, embodied kind that comes from actually knowing yourself, not the loud, performative kind.

A depleted solar plexus tends to look like over-explaining yourself, guilt after the smallest boundary, waiting for permission before you take up space, or feeling unusually small in rooms you used to command.

Tiny practice: Stand tall, hands on your ribcage, and take three breaths that expand your ribs outward on the inhale. Let the exhale be audible, a solar “ha,” a small, deliberate reclaiming of space. Then ask yourself plainly: what do I actually need right now?

The Three Shifts That Tend All Three at Once

None of these centres works in isolation, and none of them responds to force. What actually moves the needle across all three is a shift in how you relate to your own energy day to day.

  • The first is output to presence. Measuring your worth by how alive you feel doing something, rather than how much you got done.

  • The second is pushing to listening. Treating your body's signals, tension before a hard conversation, tiredness after a draining meeting, as data, not inconvenience.

  • The third is depletion to devotion. Nourishing yourself because you matter, rather than because you should.

None of these happen overnight. But energy managed this way becomes regenerative rather than something you're constantly trying to refill from empty.

Why This Matters Right Now

This isn't about becoming someone new. It's a map for something you're likely already sensing, that the unsteadiness, the flatness, the quiet loss of fire aren't random. They're signals, each pointing somewhere specific, and each one responding to attention rather than force.

Go Deeper

This gentle map sits alongside the deeper work on how your body holds and releases what it's carrying. Read Why Your Body 'Keeps the Score' in Menopause for the fuller picture.
